Streets of Granada

When I’m visiting a city I like, of course, to do the typical tourist attractions but also to have a walk on the narrows streets of its old neighborhood, where most of the hidden part of the city’s history resides. Granada’s old town is also part of the touristic map, so no chance to avoid it. Come with me on a journey in old Granada!

 Cuando estoy visitando una ciudad me gusta, por supuesto, ver las atracciones turísticas típicas, pero también me encanta dar un paseo por las calles estrechas de su casco antiguo, donde reside la parte más oculta de la historia de la ciudad. El casco antiguo de Granada es también parte del mapa turístico, por lo que no habría posibilidad de evitarlo. ¡Viaja conmigo en el casco antiguo de Granada!

Paseo de Los Tristes

Another sunny day in the marvelous city of Granada so we decided to visit the famous Paseo de Los Tristes, the romantic road of the flamenco street performers and cozy terraces where they serve tapas. This road, that goes alongside The Darro river, has its terrible name (en. Road of the Sad) from the past, when the funeral processions passed through here before arriving at the cemetery behind the Alhambra. But this road wasn’t defined all the time by the sadness, in fact, here were held many fiestas, including corridas de toros (bull-fighting) and other popular games. These places are filled with history, as the oldest buildings here (and some of the bridges) date back from 1609.

Otro día soleado en la maravillosa ciudad de Granada, así que decidimos visitar el famoso Paseo de Los Tristes, la calle romántica de los artistas callejeros flamencos y terrazas donde sirven tapas. Este camino, que va junto al río Darro, tiene su terrible nombre debido al pasado, cuando los cortejos fúnebres pasaban por aquí antes de llegar al cementerio detrás de la Alhambra. Pero este camino no se ha definido todo el tiempo por la tristeza, de hecho, aquí se celebraban muchas fiestas, incluyendo corridas de toros y otros juegos populares. Estos lugares están llenos de historia, como sus edificios más antiguos (y algunos de los puentes) datan de 1609.

Albaicín

El Albaicín or Albayzín is the name of the Granada’s Islamic neighborhood, declared (1994) a world heritage site.

It rises on a hill facing the Alhambra, at 700-800 meters above the sea level,  and many tourists journey into the Albayzin primarily for the spectactular views of Alhambra from the viewing point by the church (mirador) of San Nicolas (built on the remains of a Moorish mosque). The entire neighborhood, alongside with its residents, keep that special Moorish/North African legacy through architecture (houses, restaurants, other buildings), gastronomy, habits, commerce. For a moment you forget you’re in Spain, it’s magic! Its oldest part dates from the 11th century, when the Zirids founded Granana as their new capital. Later constructions were added by the Almohads and the Nasrids.

Our first visit in Albaicín was at night, to dinner into a local restaurant. I love the Arabian food, my wife loves drinking tea, so we went to a tetería – a place where they serve aromatic tea (and some food) and of course, shisha (the smoking device).

If you visit Granada, El Albaicín is a must-see/visit neighborhood.

El Albaicín o Albayzín es el nombre del barrio árabe de Granada, declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad (1994).

Se eleva sobre una colina frente a la Alhambra, a 700-800 metros sobre el nivel del mar, y muchos turistas viajen en el Albaicín principalmente para las vistas espectaculares de la Alhambra desde el mirador de la iglesia de San Nicolas (construida sobre los restos de una mezquita árabe). Todo el barrio, junto con sus residentes, guarda la herencia morisca/norteafricana especial a través de la arquitectura (casas, restaurantes, otros edificios), la gastronomía, los hábitos, el comercio. Por un momento olvidas que estás en España, ¡es magico! Su parte más antigua data del siglo 11, cuando los ziríes fundaron Granana como sus nueva capital. Construcciones posteriores fueron añadidos por los almohades y los nazaríes.

Nuestra primera visita en Albaicín era de noche, para cenar en un restaurante local. Me encanta la comida árabe, a mi esposa le encanta beber té, así que fuimos a una tetería – un lugar donde sirven té aromático (y algo de comida) y por supuesto, shisha (el dispositivo para fumar).
Si vais a Granada , El Albaicín es un barrio para visitar imprescindiblemente.
